So far we've had 3 baby showers at my church here in St. Petersburg. I always have very grandiose expectations which prove difficult to meet, given the lack of baby shower props sold here. And doing it all yourself is a nice idea, but very time-consuming!
At the first two baby showers I really wanted to make one of those picture-perfect cakes you see on all the sites, but there are no specially shaped baking pans or cans of fondant to be had!
I had seen the baby carriage cake on several sites, but I don't know the original source. It turned out to be fairly easy (other than transporting everything to someone else's house via metro). You really don't need any special equipment, and you get a nice finished effect.
What you need:
1 large round cake pan and 2 small ones (preferably; they can be trimmed if necessary but you'll get more crumbs)
A tray large enough to hold them
Icing for covering the cakes
Icing for decorating, if using
Candies for decorating (unless you want to use all icing)
Parchment paper or other non-stick coating to use as a base
Directions:
1) Bake the cakes and let them cool. (I made a large carrot cake and 2 small chocolate ones for the wheels )
2) Make icing and put it in the refrigerator (I used a cream cheese icing).
3) Make additional decorator's icing if using, and chill that also (I dyed some icing light pink using crushed cranberries).
4) Roll out parchment paper and arrange cake layers with the two wheels underneath the carriage body.
5) Cut out two wedges from the top portion of the carriage body, so that a hood and a handle remain.
6) Cover the top and sides of the cakes in icing using your base color.
7) Use colored icing or candies to define the wheels, hood/body of the carriage, and the handle.
